What goes in homemade mashed potato

Absolutely! With just a few simple ingredients like potatoes, salt, butter, and milk or cream for a touch of luxury, you can create incredibly delicious mashed potatoes. The key lies in using the right cooking technique to achieve that creamy and flavorful result, without the need for extra fuss with additional ingredients. Keeping it simple and focusing on the right method is the secret to making perfect mashed potatoes that everyone will love!

THE POTATOES

For achieving that fluffy yet creamy mashed potato without the need for potato ricers or other gadgets, choosing floury and all-rounder potatoes is the key. These varieties are perfect for creating the ideal everyday mash that you’ll love making regularly.

In Australia, the budget-friendly dirt-brushed potatoes widely available, known as Sebago, are excellent all-rounders that yield fantastic mashed potatoes.

In the US, go for Russet potatoes to achieve the desired fluffy texture in your mashed potatoes.

In the UK, Maris Piper potatoes are the ideal choice to make creamy and delightful mashed potatoes.

So, whether you’re in Australia, the US, or the UK, using the right type of potatoes ensures your everyday mashed potatoes will turn out perfect, hassle-free!

How to make the BEST homemade mashed potato!

Absolutely, making perfect mashed potatoes is straightforward, and here are some specific tips and steps to ensure a delicious outcome:

  1. Cut the potatoes into equal-sized pieces for even cooking.
  2. Boil the potatoes in salted water. This not only cooks them thoroughly but also seasons the potatoes all the way through. The potatoes should become very soft and almost crumble when you poke them with a fork.
  3. Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter and milk or cream, then mash the potatoes until they become creamy and fluffy.
  4. Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and create swirls across the top.
  5. For an indulgent touch, drizzle some melted butter over the mashed potatoes to take them to a whole new level of richness and flavor!

Following these tips and steps will ensure you have the perfect creamy and fluffy mashed potatoes, ready to be enjoyed with any meal!

Other flavours you can add to mashed potato

Certainly! While the classic mashed potatoes are delicious on their own, you can always add a little twist with some optional ingredients to suit your taste:

  1. Cream cheese or sour cream: If you enjoy a tangy flavor, consider adding a dollop of cream cheese or sour cream to your mashed potatoes for a unique twist.
  2. Garlic: For a delightful garlicky touch, mince one or two cloves of garlic and sauté them in melted butter before incorporating it into the mashed potatoes.
  3. Bacon bits: For an extra savory kick, add some crispy bacon bits to your mashed potatoes – it’s a crowd-pleasing addition that needs no explanation!
  4. Green onions: Finely chop or slice green onions to sprinkle over the mashed potatoes. They’ll add a mild onion flavor and a pop of color.

As a finishing touch, garnish your mashed potatoes with chopped parsley or chives for a burst of freshness. And, if you want to take it to the next level, drizzle some extra melted butter over the top.

Feel free to experiment and customize your mashed potatoes with these optional ingredients to create a dish that perfectly suits your preferences!

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg / 3 lb potatoes, peeled and cut into 2.5cm/1” cubes (Preferably Sebago, Russet or Maris Piper, Note 1)

  • 1 tbsp salt (for cooking)

  • FLAVOURINGS:

  • 60g / 4 tbsp unsalted butter , chopped

  • 1/2 cup milk , preferably warmed

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • GARNISH:

  • Extra melted butter

  • Chives or parsley , chopped

Instructions

1
To prepare delicious mashed potatoes with the perfect texture, follow these steps:
2
In a large pot, place the potatoes and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Pour water into the pot, ensuring it's about 10cm / 4" above the potatoes.
3
Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to a rapid simmer. Cook the potatoes for approximately 15 minutes or until they become very soft and easily fall apart when jabbed with a fork.
4
Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly, then return them to the pot. Let them sit for about 1 minute, shaking the pot occasionally to encourage evaporation of excess water.
5
Add your desired flavorings to the potatoes and mash them well. If you prefer a looser consistency, use milk to achieve the desired texture.
6
It's essential not to use beaters, stick blenders, food processors, or blenders, as these appliances can quickly turn the potatoes from perfect to gluey. If needed, you can pulse with a stand mixer or handheld mixer, but be cautious and stop as soon as the mash becomes creamy.
7
Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and create pretty swirls across the top. Drizzle some butter over the top and sprinkle with chives for a finishing touch.
8

To keep the mashed potatoes warm or make them ahead:

For up to 30 minutes, cover the bowl tightly with cling wrap and keep it in a warm place, such as near the stove. Gently stir before serving.
9
For up to 2 hours, place the bowl with mash over a pot of boiling hot water, occasionally turning the stove on to keep the water hot. The bowl should not touch the water.
10
For up to 4 hours, use the slow cooker's warm setting. Press baking paper onto the potato surface, then cover the bowl tightly with foil. Keep it in the slow cooker on the WARM setting (60C/140F or less).
11
If making ahead for the next day, follow the Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes recipe, which includes a restaurant trick to keep them fresh and flavorful.
12
With these tips, you'll be able to prepare and enjoy perfect mashed potatoes with the desired consistency and flavor!

Notes

To achieve the best results, opt for floury and all-rounder potatoes: In Australia, the cheap dirt-brushed potatoes widely available, known as Sebago, are fantastic all-rounders. For the US, Russet potatoes are ideal. In the UK, Maris Piper potatoes are the recommended choice. Be cautious with handheld beaters or kitchen stand mixers as over-beating potatoes activates their starch, resulting in a gluey texture that is undesirable. While beating can make the mash smoother, it can also lead to a denser creaminess. It's important to note that mashed potatoes will never be 100% smooth when using a beater, as the potatoes tend to turn into a glue-like consistency first. For an ultra-smooth mashed potato, restaurants often push the mash through a sieve, but this requires special equipment and can be quite cumbersome to do at home. If you're looking for an ultra-creamy Paris Mash, there's a recipe based on Guillaume's famous version that uses an incredibly generous amount of butter, resulting in a truly indulgent and incredible dish! With these tips and options in mind, you can customize your mashed potatoes to achieve the desired texture and creaminess level that suits your preferences best.
